Abril is part of the life of millions of Brazilians
Abril Group is one of the largest and most influential communication and education groups in Latin America. Founded in 1950, it currently employs over 7 thousand people. Abrilpar, the Civita family holding, manages Abril S. A. (Media, Printing, Distribution and Services) and controls the capital of Abril Educação S.A., which in the beginning of 2010 started working separately from Abril S.A. after a process of partnership restructuring, plus several other enterprises. Abril provides information, culture, education and entertainment for practically all target audiences, working on several media.
Abril Media, which comprises Editora Abril, MTV, Abril Mídia Digital, Elemídia and Alphabase, is the largest targeted communication company in Brazil. Editora Abril published 54 titles in 2010 and is the leader in 22 out of the 26 segments in which it operates. Its publications had a circulation of 196 million issues during the year, in a universe of almost 27 million readers and 4,4 million subscriptions. Seven out of the ten most read magazines in the country are published by Abril, Veja being the third largest weekly information magazine in the world and largest outside the United States. MTV is the largest TV channel for young people in Brazil. It reaches 33 million homes in the country, with almost 20 million young people. Besides the TV channel, its several websites get a daily rate of over 1,2 million unique visitors. With more than 40 websites and applications for tablets and smartphones, Abril Mídia Digital creates content for the most varied targets, from news web portals to e-commerce websites. Elemídia is the Brazilian leader in out of home digital media. Its screens are present in over 1,600 commercial establishments and reach 14 million people weekly. Alphabase is Abril Mídia’s business unit that offers solutions in interactive marketing, with products and communication serviced connected to Abril’s audience.
Abril Gráfica is the largest printing plant in Latin America, with more than 1,000 employees and 52.500 m² of floor space, where 568 million copies are produced. It is the first Brazilian printing plant to have an inventory on greenhouse gas emissions, based on the GHG Protocol methodology, besides the FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) and PEFC (Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification schemes) certifications.
Abril controls a large distribution and logistics operation that covers the whole country. DGB is the distribution and logistics holding which comprises four companies, three of which dedicated to distribution (Dinap, FC Comercial and Magazine Express) and one being the logistics branch of Abril Group (Treelog). Dinap serves over 80 publishing houses, reaching more than 30 thousand points-of-sale and 96% of domestic consumption potential. Besides distribution, it offers assistance in developing new titles, trademarketing plans and points-of-sale actions. FC Comercial attends around 190 publishing houses and is present in over 2 thousand cities and 28 points-of-sale in the country’s different channels. Treelog One of the world’s largest door-to-door magazine delivery operations. In a single weekend it delivers 780 thousand copies throughout the country in just 16 hours. It uses a network of 350 distributors and 18 branches, reaching 2,2 thousand municipalities.
Created in 2007 as part of Abril Group, Abril Educação started working separately from Abril S.A. at the beginning of 2010 after a process of partnership restructuring. It comprises two publishing houses, Ática and Scipione, two teaching systems, Anglo and Ser, the pH Course and School and the ETB Group (Escolas Técnicas do Brasil), Siga, preparatory courses for examinations and Livemocha, language teaching. Bought in 1999, the publishing houses Ática and Scipione are leaders in the Brazilian schoolbook market, with close to 3,500 authors and over 50 million books sold in 2010. The teaching systems Ser, created in 2007, and Anglo, bought in 2010 have 387 thousand students in over a thousand Brazilian schools. The pH Course and School, one of the most traditional in Rio de Janeiro, has 6,600 students in its branches in Rio and in Niterói. The ETB Group, focused on high quality technical education, has 2,400 students in its units in the state of São Paulo. Siga counts on the unique experience and quality of Anglo Teaching System to be the absolute reference in preparatory courses for examinations. Livemocha is the largest online community of English language teaching in the world and has 2.2 million users in Brazil.
The Victor Civita Foundation, created in 1985 and ever since dedicated to the improvement of basic education in the country, was the starting point of Abril’s social responsibility projects. With the Nova Escola magazine, the Foundation reaches monthly 3,3 million teachers, principals and coordinators in virtually every school in the country. Besides supporting volunteer work and the talent of its professionals, Abril provides resources to several initiatives that strengthen the bond between the company and the community and that also promote education, culture, environmental preservation, health and volunteering in several projects of citizenship and social participation.
